Taber Mongero, who is ranked the 36th best D1 - Shortstop in America, graduated high school at 138 pounds. Yes, 5’8” - 138 pounds, to be exact. He is a hard nosed “dirt dawg” or as we like to call it… a hard nosed Dirt Bro. Taber prides himself on playing the game the right way and being a great teammate. He was always one of the smallest players on his teams growing up, so he had to learn to play big and develop superior baseball IQ and situational awareness in order to succeed and advance to higher levels. Because of his size and many people doubting him, he plays the game with a big “chip” on his shoulder. Most believed he was too small physically to ever play college baseball, not to mention becoming a D-1 Shortstop. Taber is very strong in his Christian faith and plays the game for an AO1 (audience of 1…being God). He believes in working hard, working smart, and creating processes on defense and offense that transfer into improved game performance. Taber was a First-team All-CAA selection in 2022 and an ABCA Second-Team All-Atlantic D1 Region selection. He is the only UNCW Seahawk to play and start in every game in 2021 and 2022. Ranked among UNCW's single-season leaders at shortstop in fielding percentage at .961, Taber tied the program record with 10 defensive assists in a win over the College of Charleston. He finished 2022 with a .301 batting average and six home runs. Added 12 doubles and a pair of triples. Including 17 multi-hit games and seven three-hit outings.
Prior to UNCW: Played one season at National perennial JUCO power, College of Central Florida. Taber started all 27 games at shortstop, that COVID shortened season, hitting 317 with 33 hits, including nine doubles.
Prior to JUCO: Started college career at Gardner Webb University (D1 - Big South Conference) his freshman season, starting in 47 games, mostly at shortstop at 142 pounds. His head coach announced his retirement mid season and a serious hand injury led to Taber transferring to JUCO to pursue his dream of one day playing for UNCW.
In High School... Taber was selected Georgia Co-Player of the Year (3 AAA) and was a two-time 1st Team All-State selection. Other honors include 7 AAA Region Hitter of the Year, including being selected All-Region Team four times. In 2017 he helped his HS team, The North Hall Trojans (Georgia), win their first ever State Championship, where his father, Trent, was the head coach. His senior year he set the “single season hits” record for North Hall HS with 60.
Trent provides lessons in Wilmington , NC area and travels across the country doing Dirt Bros camps and clinics. Contact Taber @ 770-539-2429
